Silk making has existed in Thailand since ancient times. Traces of silk thread (3,000 years old) were found in Ban Chiang, Udonthani. Now a days, they are made from many areas in Thailand, such as the northern part of Thailand: Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai.
The sheen of woven silk cloth is its most admired quality. This comes from the structure of the silk fibres, which are triangular in cross-section and so reflect like prisms. It also has layers of protein that adds luster and smoothness to its natural sheen. At the same time, this fibre is immensely strong for its light weight, and both elastic and supple.
The cloth made from Thai silk has a coarse texture with uneven, slightly knotty threads. This imperfection gives it a special beauty and extremely suitable for hand weaving.
